Suffering from chronic neck or back pain?

What is a Medial Branch Nerve Block?

The medial branch nerves are very small pain nerves involving the facet joints in the spine. A medial branch nerve block is a diagnostic procedure used to determine if the facet joints are a source of pain in the neck, mid back, or low back. You will be evaluated following a medial branch nerve block to determine whether the expected level and duration of pain relief has occurred. If so, you would be considered a candidate for radiofrequency ablation.

What should I expect during a Medial Branch Block?

For a medial branch block, you have the option of light sedation during your procedure. Using an X-ray machine (fluoroscope), your doctor will identify the area of the medial branch nerve block. The skin is then numbed with a local anesthetic and the treatment will begin. Once the nerve is reached, a small amount of anesthetic agent (such as lidocaine) is injected to “block” the nerve. Improved pain relief following a medial branch nerve block is an indication that the facet joint is the source of pain and that a procedure known as radiofrequency ablation will provide effective and long-term pain relief.

What is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally-invasive procedure used to treat chronic neck, mid-back, or low back pain. RFA utilizes radiofrequency waves to lesion the nerves transmitting pain signals from the neck, mid back, or low back, which then leads to significant pain relief.

What should I expect during a RFA procedure?

The doctor will utilize an X-ray machine to guide the procedure. You have the option of light sedation during your procedure. The skin is numbed with local anesthetic, and a special needle (cannula) will then be directed to the medial branch nerve. A small electrode is then directed through the cannula. The tip of the needle then emits radiofrequency waves, which lesions the tiny medial branch nerve. The RFA procedure is an outpatient procedure that is typically very well tolerated.

Will a Radiofrequency Ablation help my pain?

A radiofrequency ablation procedure can lead to pain relief from six months to several years. Radiofrequency ablation has been shown to be a safe and effective procedure, and is an excellent option to treat chronic neck, mid back, or low back pain. Patients typically experience significant improvement in their functioning and quality of life following this procedure.
